GROUP I MAINS POLITY

DISCUSS EACH ADJECTIVE ATTACHED TO THE WORD 'REPUBLIC' IN THE PREAMBLE. ARE THEY DEFENDABLE IN THE PRESENT CIRCUMSTANCES?

The PREAMBLE is a manifestation of the values of our Constitution. It starts with, WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN, SECULAR, DEMOCRATIC, REPUBLIC.

SOVEREIGNTY :
sovereignty is the freedom to take decision in internal and external spheres. There is no authority above it. India is neither a dependency nor a Dominion of any foreign state but an Independent stare.

SECULARISM :
It means tolerant, neutral and doesn't have a state religion. In India all the religions were given equal priority and no discrimination. No official religion to state but it has right to intervene in public interest.

DEMOCRACY :
It is a form Government, is elected by the people through popular elections periodically. It offers opportunity for all people to participate , contest and even hold office of power. Democracatic form of government offers freedom of choice and governing institutions are ultimately accountable to the people.

SOCIALISM :
India adheres to the democratic model of socialism. That is achieving socialistic goals through peaceful and consensual means. It doesn't mean Nationalization of resources However; state reserves the right to intervene.

The preamble was drafted decades ago and the meaning of terms which attached to constitution has undergone huge change. For example in the LPG era multi-Lateral institutions like WTO, IMF and MNCs etc force the states to make policies to suit their interest s. Our history shows that India has been careful in adopting policy prescription: think globally but act locally.
There are some allegations about socialism; it was the reason for low growth rate 3.5% before LPG reforms. However India didn't adopt
Socialism an ideological luxury. It adopted it as a policy of choice due to our contextual restraints. If anyone felt socialism was not successful, it is not because of faults in the ideology of socialism but in its Implementation
