HORTICULTURE SECTOR IS THE POTENTIAL SOURCE OF SUSTAINABLE LIVELY
HOOD TO FARMERS. CRITICALLY ANALYSE THE STATEMENT.
ALSO, EXPLAIN THE STEPS TAKEN BY GOVERNMENT TO IMPROVE HORTICULTURE.
According
to Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations, horticulture means high
investment crop production using resources intensively for high value product.
ex: Fruits, vegetables, medicinal plants etc..
Horticulture as potential source:
1) It
requires less amount of resource inputs like pesticides, water etc.,
2) Best utilisation of undulating land and waste land. Hence it is
beneficial for hilly farmers also.
3) Horticulture is source of raw materials for industries like
agro processing and food etc..
4) It will provide nutritional security ie., fruits do vegetables
are highly rich in micro nutrients and amino acids.
5) Improving women empowerment by providing employment
opportunities through horticulture sector.
However, it has some constraints for effective
production:
1) It needs
expertise to get max possible output.
2) There is a huge wastage in storing due to lack of sufficient
cold storages and also wastage during transportation.
3) It requires relatively expensive inputs and assured irrigation
is required on timely basis.
Steps taken by Government to
improve horticulture sector:
1) Mission
for integrated development of horticulture ( MIDH): It is a centrally sponsored
scheme launched during 12th plan. To promote holistic growth of horticulture
sector including bamboo and coconut.
2) Merchandise exports from India scheme: In this, farmers or
exporters are incentivised for export of their goods or products including
fruits and vegetables to specified markets.
Horticulture
sector is not only helping to meet the objective of doubling farmers income but
also to provide nutritional security.
